Leisure Society handcrafts each frame in Japan from 12k, 18k, and 24k gold-plated titanium and cotton-based acetate, using techniques more common to fine jewelry than eyewear. Founded by California designer and CFDA member Shane Baum, the collection draws from classic silhouettes and vintage hardware to produce heirloom pieces, often released in numbered editions of just 60. What makes Leisure Society eyewear special?

Leisure Society is built around heirloom design, meaning each frame is made to be kept and passed down rather than replaced. Frames are handcrafted in Japan from gold-plated titanium and cotton-based acetate, and production is deliberately small. Many designs are released in editions of around sixty pieces and are individually numbered, which makes the collection closer to collectible objects than seasonal eyewear.

Where are Leisure Society glasses made?

Leisure Society is designed in California and handcrafted in Japan by artisans working in a region that has produced eyewear for over a century. The titanium construction allows detailing that is not possible in other materials, including textured bridges and sculpted profiles designed in three dimensions.

How much do Leisure Society glasses cost?

Leisure Society spans a wider price range than most brands we carry. Acetate frames start around $375. Titanium models typically run from about $1,000 to $1,500. Frames finished in heavier gold plating and precious metals reach approximately $3,200. The range reflects the material rather than the design, so a simple silhouette in a precious finish can cost several times the same shape in acetate.

Who is Shane Baum?

Shane Baum is the California based designer behind Leisure Society and a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Before launching the brand he spent years in eyewear design and development, including work with Marc Jacobs on eyewear for Louis Vuitton, and projects with Rebecca Minkoff and Mark Mothersbaugh. Leisure Society reflects that background in its emphasis on craft and material over trend.

What does 12k, 18k, and 24k gold plating mean on a frame?

Leisure Society plates its titanium frames in 12 karat, 18 karat, or 24 karat gold. The karat number describes the purity of the gold used in the plating, with 24 karat being the purest and warmest in tone, and 12 karat reading cooler and more subdued. The plating is applied over a pure titanium base, so the frame keeps titanium's light weight and strength while carrying the color and finish of solid gold.

Can I get Leisure Society frames with prescription lenses?

Yes. Every Leisure Society optical frame at Visionary Optics can be fit with ZEISS prescription lenses, and most single vision prescriptions are ready the same day. We also fit progressive and specialty lens prescriptions, and we can fit prescription lenses into Leisure Society sunglasses.
