Beyond Standard Prescriptions

Specialty Lenses in NYC

Clinically studied lens technologies for migraine light sensitivity, myopia control, and other specialized visual needs. Fitted at Visionary Optics by independent opticians who have never compromised your vision since 1989.

Prescriptions With Purpose

Standard prescription lenses correct how sharply you see. Specialty lenses go further, addressing specific visual challenges through advanced filtering, optical design, or wavelength-selective materials. Whether you experience light sensitivity with migraine, want to slow childhood myopia progression, or need lenses tuned for a demanding visual environment, the right specialty lens can make a measurable difference in daily life.

At Visionary Optics we curate specialty lens technologies with the same care we bring to our independent frame collections. Every lens we offer is clinically studied and fit by our team through a proper consultation. We help you understand what each lens does, whether it fits your prescription, and how to make the most of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are specialty lenses?
Specialty lenses go beyond standard single-vision or progressive prescriptions. They address specific visual, wellness, or developmental needs such as migraine light sensitivity, childhood myopia progression, screen fatigue, and glare in demanding environments. At Visionary Optics we fit clinically studied specialty lens technologies alongside our standard ZEISS single-vision and progressive lenses.
Which specialty lenses does Visionary Optics offer?
We currently offer Avulux Migraine and Light Sensitivity Lenses at all three locations. Additional specialty lens technologies including Essilor Stellest for myopia control are launching soon. Our opticians can also help with prescription sunglass lenses, specialty computer lenses, and prism prescriptions.
Do I need a special consultation for a specialty lens?
Yes. Specialty lenses require a fitting consultation to confirm the lens is right for you, review your current prescription, and take proper measurements. Consultations take about 30 minutes at any of our three NYC locations.
Are specialty lenses covered by insurance?
Some specialty lenses are FSA and HSA eligible. Vision insurance coverage varies by plan and lens type. We are in-network with VSP and can help you understand your benefits at your consultation.
Can specialty lenses be made with my prescription?
Yes. Most specialty lens technologies including Avulux can be produced with single-vision, progressive, or bifocal prescriptions. Our independent optometrists at all three locations can also perform an eye exam if you need an updated prescription.
