About Matsuda

Matsuda makes optical frames and sunglasses by hand in the eyewear workshops of Sabae, Japan. A single design can take as many as 250 steps and up to two years to develop. Each frame is hand-finished by master polishers who have apprenticed for ten years.

What the frames are made of

Matsuda works in titanium and stainless steel, and some of its metal frames use sterling silver or 18k solid gold. Its acetate is an organic plastic derived from cotton, cured for more than three months before a frame is made from it. Many temples are engraved by hand, and several current models carry the brand's M and N motif. Matsuda says every hinge and component of a frame is considered as part of its design.

Optical frames and sunglasses

We carry both sides of the line. Our Matsuda optical glasses include round acetate frames such as the M1041 and lightweight titanium shapes such as the M3166. Our Matsuda sunglasses include the M3023, a modified aviator in aged Japanese acetate and titanium, and the M3167, a titanium crown pantos. Matsuda also keeps a Heritage Collection of original designs chosen from its archive.

Prescription lenses

Matsuda does not sell prescription lenses on its own site. It leaves lenses to its retail partners, and its frames are designed to take almost any prescription. Our opticians fit Matsuda optical frames with ZEISS prescription lenses, and many are ready the same day at our stores. If you order online, we ship nationwide, with or without prescription lenses.

Matsuda in New York

Matsuda has no stores of its own. It sells through select retailers, who often carry more styles than its website shows. Visionary Optics is an Authorized Retailer of Matsuda. Every frame we sell is 100% authentic.

All three of our stores carry Matsuda. In Manhattan, visit us on the Upper East Side at 1409 3rd Avenue or in Chelsea at 173 7th Avenue. In Brooklyn, our Carroll Gardens store is at 315 Court Street. Styles move between our stores, so call ahead if you want to try a particular model.

Choosing a size

Matsuda gives each model a fit, from narrow to standard, and some models come in two sizes. The M3023 is offered with a 57 mm lens and a 52 mm lens. Our opticians can measure your current frame and suggest the size to order before you buy online. If you are between sizes, bring the glasses you wear most and we will compare them with the Matsuda models in the store.
