Masunaga Optical has been making eyeglasses in Fukui, Japan since 1905. The atelier still operates on the founder's original code: "We manufacture excellent eyeglasses. We want to make a profit if we can, but we don't hesitate to take a loss to make perfect glasses."

Every frame passes through more than two hundred manual steps. Acetate is hand-polished to a depth that machine finishing cannot reach. Hinges are milled in-house to seven-barrel specifications. Titanium is worked to a lightness that disappears on the face.

Why Masunaga at Visionary Optics?

Masunaga is the original Japanese eyewear maker, founded in 1905 in Fukui Prefecture by Gozaemon Masunaga. The brand's founder is widely credited as the father of the Japanese optical industry — establishing the craft and trade that turned Sabae into the world's premier eyewear region.

Visionary Optics carries the Masunaga regular collection across our three NYC locations, spanning over 190 styles in titanium, acetate, and combination materials. Each frame undergoes up to 200 manual steps in Masunaga's vertically integrated Sabae workshop — every stage from raw material to hand-finishing performed in-house.

Prefer to try before you buy? Visit any of our three NYC locations for an in-person fitting. Many frames are available for same-day pickup with ZEISS single vision lenses.
